United States Of Hate Case Study - 908 Words

United States of Hate SPLC, The Southern Poverty Law Center, is a non-profit organization here in the U.S. They monitor the activities of hate groups and other extremists such as neo-Nazi’s, Ku Klux Khan, antigovernment militias and much more. Currently they are tracking 1,600+ groups to ensure the safety of many underrepresented groups. When you arrive on their web page you can expect to see many articles of hate crimes they are representing in court. They also have a Hate Map; this map of the United States can show you the 917 groups that are currently operating. You can also click different icons to learn more about different minority groups and how you can fight hate and bigotry. She created a large fan base on social media with her controversial videos talking about current news. Her point of view is clouded by misinformation and can potentially start reasoning hate for others, which is what the SPLC is not about. In 2016, Tomi spoke with Charlemagne, radio host, who had made her â€Å"Donkey of the day† due to her options of the Beyoncà © Super Bowl 50 performance. The performance was used to represent and inform the American citizens about police brutally but Tomi saw it as, â€Å"a salute to the revolutionary-minded Black Panthers, a group she compared to the Ku Klux Klan† (MTV, 2016). If you watch the video of her conversation with Charlemagne, you can hear her cherry-pick the few people who have looted, killed etc. to represent the whole Black Lives Movement. But when asked if we cou ld do the same with police and use the few who kill unarmed blacks to represent the whole force her response was no. While her platform grows so do the minds of many Americans and its scary. It’s okay to have your own thoughts but it is important to be informed and have the facts.
